5 Beautiful Villages You Must Visit in Germany

As well as being known for its vibrant, modern and cutting-edge cities like Berlin and Munich, Germany is also famous for its beautiful and traditional villages. Visiting the quaint and picturesque villages that dot the countryside of Germany is the perfect opportunity to sample authentic German food, meet the German locals, and get to know a little more about German culture.

We’ve put together our list of the five villages in Germany that we believe are most worth a visit in your lifetime.

Rothenburg

Rothenburg ob de Tauber may be your only chance to see a still-intact medieval walled city in your lifetime. Located in Bavaria, west of Nuremberg, 40% of the village was destroyed during World War II. However, it now exists in a kind of time capsule, as the locals were quick to rebuild their town in its former style to preserve the architecture.

Rothenburg is the epitome of a German fairytale village, with its webs of winding cobbled streets, its beautifully preserved half-timbered townhouses in bright colours and its joyful community atmosphere.

Crowds tend to flock to Rothenburg both in the summer months and over the Christmas period to sample its glorious Christmas market, however another reason people visit is because it was a location for the filming of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2!

Bamberg

Bamberg, Germany

If you’ve always wanted to visit Bavaria, Bamberg is considered to be one of the most beautiful towns in the region, and is definitely worth a visit. This little town’s marvellous architecture means it’s commonly regarded as one of Germany’s most attractive settlements, and it proudly holds a UNESCO World Heritage listing.

A favourite for beer lovers, Bamberg boasts over ten breweries dotted around the town, so make sure you get a chance to sample some of the town’s famous ‘smoked beer’ before you leave!

Lindau

Lindau Germany

Located in the south of Germany, right on the border between Germany and Austria, the village of Lindau looks over the beautiful Lake Constance, as well as enjoying many views of the Alps. A stunning natural location, Lindau also sports the authentic German half-timbered houses and many historical buildings.

Triberg

Triberg, Germany

Triberg (otherwise known by its full name ‘Triberg im Schwarzwald’) is a stunningly pretty town that is located in the midst of the mysterious and beautiful Black Forest.

It’s the most visited city in the area, and is a great starting point for some excellent hiking trails, including one that runs to the Triberg Falls (one of the tallest waterfalls in Germany). Triberg is also home to one of the biggest cuckoo clocks in Germany!

Fussen

Fussen, Germany

Fussen is considered to be the southern endpoint of Germany’s famous ‘Romantic Road’, located at the base of the glorious Alps. If you’ve dreamt of visiting the Neuschwanstein Castle, then a stopover in Fussen is ideal, as it’s closely located and you’ll be able to get there easily.

The Neuschwanstein Castle is said to be the castle that Walt Disney took inspiration from for Cinderella’s castle – and you really can see the resemblance! Every year, up to 1.4 million people visit the castle (that’s about 6,000 every day!) so we recommend booking a tour to make sure you get the best experience.

The town is famous for its history of violin making (as well as other stringed instruments), so if you’re a music enthusiast then you might be able to catch some of this in action - or at least learn about it at the Fussen Heritage Museum. And if you’ve caught the history bug after visiting Neuschwanstein Castle and want more royal exposure, then the famous Hohenschwangau Castle (King Ludwig II’s childhood home) is also nearby for your viewing pleasure.
